Sri Lanka tea prices rise, crops fall
Sri Lankan tea prices rose at this week's auction as quality improved and crops coming down owing to drought, brokers said.
Prices of some varieties of 'Western high grown' teas cultivated on the Western slopes of the central hills rose by 15 rupees a kilo and more following quality, brokers Asia Siyaka Commodities said.

The teas are grown mainly by regional plantations companies listed on the Colombo bourse.

The Western quality season, when teas from the area produce their best quality and fetch high prices, has been delayed this year because of bad weather.

But brokers said there were signs of quality improving.

"Overall quality of offerings particularly from the Western sector showed a fair improvement," Forbes & Walker Tea Brokers said.

"Next week a further improvement is seen in the quality of offerings particularly from the Western and Nuwara Eliya planting districts."

The brokers said all planting districts have reported extremely dry weather conditions since the beginning of February.

Some hill country estates suffered frost damage during the first week of March while most estates are finding it difficult to offer six days of plucking for workers because of dry weather.

"Consequently, the crop intakes at the moment show a sharp decline compared to the intakes two weeks ago," Forbes & Walker Tea Brokers said.

They forecast a sharp fall in auction quantities from the present levels of seven million kilos to around five million kilos in April.
