Plan to ensure high quality and price of tea14 March 2010The Sri Lanka Tea Board and Sri Lanka Standards Institute have jointly implemented a national standards system for the tea industry to ensure its high quality and price.
The awareness programme on this product certification scheme was held in Colombo on Friday.
Sri Lanka, the world’s largest orthodox tea exporter, had lost its prime position by September 2009.
Export figures shows that Sri Lanka is now in third place, behind Kenya and China for the first time.
Within the past few decades Kenya has improved its productivity to emerge as the number one tea exporter to the world.
Speaking at the awareness program on the product certification for the Tea sector, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tea Board Lalith Hettiarachchi pointed out that the industry had implemented innovative strategies to protect competitiveness.
