FROM THE OLD FORUM

THE PLANTER’S LAMENT

When God had moulded all the species,
A wonderful job with all those pieces,
To satisfy all foolish banter,
He placed on earth the foolish Planter.

On this poor being fell the scorn,
Of tea proprietors yet unborn,
His life was sure predestined,
To be the very lowest rated.

Just look at the life this creature leads,
His calling, to supply the needs,
Of clerks and coolies, in fact, the lot,
Whether they be parasites or not.

The drought arrives with “Yellow Mite”,
And with the rain comes “Blister Blight”,
The poor old planter’s hair turns grey,
When he sees what Brokers have to say.

The fans are not working in the loft,
The lush green leaf’s not going soft,
The good old Ruston’s broken down,
And the fired teas are looking brown.

To ease this harassed creature’s lot,
The Company provides his one bright spot,
But his spirits drop to ten times deeper,
When they favour him with a “know all creeper”.

Now this bright spark, just fresh from school,
Knows all, to begin with, as a rule,
The years pass quickly for this “crank”,
He becomes a P.D. his mind a blank.

But the Planter must go slaving on,
Up in the morning, at the crack of dawn,
And just when things are really humming,
He gets word that his V.A.’s coming.

As he drags his weary bones to bed,
There’s one thought going through his head,
“Things will turn all right, I’m sure,
But gosh, I’m feeling proper poor”.

So now we’ll leave this scene of woe,
But now and then our thoughts will go,
We’ll think of him while sipping tea,
And pity him in his misery.

NB.

Creeper is a trainee planter.
P.D. is a Periya Dorai – Tamil for Manager or Supervisor.
V.A. is a Visiting Agent, who inspects the tea estate every year.
